Understanding CPP (Cents Per Point)
The key metric for evaluating points redemptions
CPP (Cents Per Point) measures how much value you get from each point when booking a hotel. It is calculated by dividing the cash rate by the number of points required:
CPP = Cash Rate / Points Required
Example: $1,200 room / 30,000 points = 4.0 cents per point
A higher CPP means better value. Most credit card points are worth about 1 cent each when redeemed as cash back, so anything above 1.0 CPP means you are getting more value from a points booking than from a cash redemption.
Outstanding value. You are getting more than double the typical cash redemption rate. Common with Hyatt properties in premium destinations.
Park Hyatt Maldives: 30K Hyatt points for a $1,200/night room = 4.0 CPP
Solid value that beats most cash-back redemptions. A reliable sweet spot for planning trips.
Hyatt Regency Bali: 15K Hyatt points for a $250/night room = 1.67 CPP
Comparable to cash-back value. Consider whether holding points for a better redemption makes sense.
Marriott mid-tier: 35K points for a $400/night room = 1.14 CPP
Below cash-back value. You would get more value from statement credits. Avoid these unless you have no other use for the points.

Wait for Transfer Bonuses
Credit card issuers regularly offer 20-40% transfer bonuses to select partners. These can dramatically improve your CPP. Sign up for alerts and be patient.
Check Off-Peak vs Peak Pricing
Many hotel programs now use dynamic pricing. Booking during off-peak dates can require 30-50% fewer points for the same room.
Leverage 5th Night Free
Marriott and Hilton offer a free 5th night on points bookings — effectively a 20% discount. IHG offers a 4th night free for Platinum Elite members. Book in multi-night blocks when possible.
Hyatt is the Gold Standard
Chase UR to Hyatt at 1:1 consistently delivers the best CPP in the hotel loyalty ecosystem. For luxury destinations, this is almost always your best bet.
