Every points blog assumes you should always use points. That's wrong.
We ran the numbers across official hotel websites for multiple check-in dates and found massive seasonal swings. The same hotel can be a brilliant points play in January and a terrible one in June — same points cost, wildly different cash rate. Few sources have systematically mapped this out.
Here's the seasonal decision framework for the top island destinations, using real pricing from official hotel websites.
The Core Principle: CPP Moves With Cash Rates, Not Points
Most hotel programs use dynamic pricing, but here's what most travelers miss: points prices are stickier than cash prices. When demand drops in off-season, cash rates can fall 40-60% while points prices barely move. That means your CPP collapses in low season.
The reverse is also true: in peak season, cash rates spike but points pricing increases less aggressively, making points MORE valuable.
The rule: Use points in peak season (December-March for most islands). Pay cash in off-season (May-October).
Maldives: The Biggest Seasonal Swing
The Maldives has the most dramatic seasonal pricing of any island destination.
Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi (Hilton)
| Season | Hilton Points | Cash Rate | CPP | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peak (Dec-Mar) | 250,000 | $3,205 | 1.3c | Use points |
| Shoulder (Apr-May) | ~250,000 | ~$1,800 | ~0.7c | Borderline |
| Off-peak (Jun-Oct) | ~250,000 | ~$1,200 | ~0.5c | Pay cash |
In peak season, you're getting 1.3 CPP — strong for Hilton, especially via Amex MR at 1:2 (effectively 2.6 CPP on your MR). Hilton also offers 5th night free on award stays, boosting value further on longer bookings. In off-season, the same 250,000 points buy a ~$1,200 room — below average Hilton value. Pay cash and save those points for peak season.
Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa (Hyatt)
| Season | Hyatt Points | Cash Rate | CPP | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peak (Dec-Mar) | 35,000 | $1,676 | 4.8c | Use points — exceptional |
| Off-peak (Jun-Oct) | 35,000 | ~$1,000 | ~2.9c | Still use points |
This is why Hyatt wins. At 35,000 points per night with a $1,676 cash rate, you're getting 4.8 CPP in peak season — among the best redemptions we've found. Even if cash rates drop to ~$1,000 in off-season, you're still looking at ~2.9 CPP, well above the "worth it" threshold. The Park Hyatt is a year-round points play.
W Maldives (Marriott)
| Season | Marriott Points | Cash Rate | CPP | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peak (Dec-Mar) | 107,500 | $1,164 | 1.1c | Use points |
| Off-peak (Jun-Oct) | ~80,000 | ~$600 | ~0.75c | Borderline |
Marriott's dynamic pricing actually works in your favor here — points prices drop with demand, keeping CPP relatively stable. The W also offers 5th night free on award stays. A reasonable points play year-round, but peak season is clearly better.
Bora Bora: Peak Season Is the Points Play
Bora Bora has extreme peak/off-peak swings because it's a luxury-only destination.
St. Regis Bora Bora (Marriott)
| Season | Marriott Points | Cash Rate | CPP | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peak (Jun-Oct, Dec) | 132,800 | $5,543 | 4.2c | Use points — exceptional |
| Off-peak (Nov, Feb-May) | 138,247 | $2,359 | 1.7c | Still use points |
Note: Bora Bora's peak is reversed from the Maldives — June through October is dry season (winter in the Southern Hemisphere). The St. Regis delivers outstanding CPP in peak season because cash rates more than double while points stay roughly the same. Marriott's 5th night free benefit adds even more value on longer stays. Even in off-peak, 1.7 CPP is solid for Marriott.
Conrad Bora Bora Nui (Hilton)
| Season | Hilton Points | Cash Rate | CPP | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shoulder (May) | 200,000 | $1,901 | 0.95c | Use points |
| Peak (Jul-Sep) | 506,842 | $1,987 | 0.4c | Pay cash |
This is a perfect example of the trap. In peak season, Hilton's dynamic pricing pushes the points cost from 200K to over 500K — more than 2.5x — while cash only goes up ~5%. The CPP drops from 0.95c to 0.4c. Peak Conrad Bora Bora on points is one of the worst redemptions we've found. Pay the $1,987 cash and save your Hilton points for shoulder season.
Koh Samui: The Year-Round Sweet Spot
Thailand's pricing is less volatile, making points decisions more stable.
Hyatt Regency Koh Samui (Hyatt)
| Season | Hyatt Points | Cash Rate | CPP | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peak (Dec-Apr) | 17,000 | $246 | 1.5c | Use points |
| Off-peak (May-Oct) | 17,000 | ~$150 | ~0.9c | Borderline |
In peak season, 1.5 CPP at just 17,000 points per night makes this one of the most accessible Hyatt redemptions. In off-season, CPP drops to ~0.9c — still around the Hyatt "worth it" line. If you're flexible, target December-April for best points value.
Conrad Koh Samui (Hilton)
| Season | Hilton Points | Cash Rate | CPP | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peak (Dec-Apr) | 110,000 | $1,041 | 0.95c | Use points (via Amex = 1.9c) |
| Off-peak (May-Oct) | ~90,000 | ~$525 | ~0.6c | Borderline |
The Amex MR transfer trick (1:2) makes peak-season Conrad a strong play: 55,000 Amex MR for a $1,041 villa = 1.9 CPP on your MR. Hilton's 5th night free benefit further enhances value on 5-night stays. In off-season, the math weakens.
The Decision Cheat Sheet
| Destination | Peak Season | Use Points? | Off Season | Use Points? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maldives (Hyatt) | Dec-Mar | Yes (4.8c) | Jun-Oct | Yes (~2.9c) |
| Maldives (Hilton) | Dec-Mar | Yes (1.3c) | Jun-Oct | No (~0.5c) |
| Maldives (Marriott) | Dec-Mar | Yes (1.1c) | Jun-Oct | Maybe (~0.75c) |
| Bora Bora (Marriott) | Jun-Oct | Yes (4.2c) | Nov-May | Yes (1.7c) |
| Bora Bora (Hilton) | May shoulder | Yes (0.95c) | Jul-Sep peak | No (0.4c) |
| Koh Samui (Hyatt) | Dec-Apr | Yes (1.5c) | May-Oct | Maybe (~0.9c) |
| Koh Samui (Hilton) | Dec-Apr | Yes (0.95c) | May-Oct | No (~0.6c) |
| Mauritius (IHG) | Jul-Nov | Yes (0.8c) | Dec-Mar | Maybe (~0.6c) |
| St. Lucia (Hyatt) | Dec-Apr | Yes (2.2c) | May-Nov | Yes (~1.5c) |
Pattern: Hyatt is almost always worth using points regardless of season. Hilton swings wildly — peak season yes, off-season usually no. Marriott falls in between.
Bottom Line
The difference between a 4.8 CPP redemption and a 0.4 CPP redemption is timing and program choice. Our analysis shows that peak-season island bookings consistently deliver 2-3x better CPP than off-season — and for Hilton specifically, off-season points bookings are often worse than paying cash.
The simple framework:
- Hyatt: Use points year-round (CPP stays above 1.0c even off-peak)
- Marriott: Use points in peak season, evaluate off-peak case by case
- Hilton: Use points ONLY in peak/shoulder season. Pay cash off-peak.
- IHG: Similar to Marriott — peak season preferred
